Costa Rica Mission II - January 2012
Eight members of Wilson UMC traveled to Costa Rica to continue construction of the parsonage for the Faro del Este Methodist Church located in the town of San Ramon.
One half of the team split up in the afternoon and ran a Vacation Bible School from 1-4 every afternoon. By the end of the week, 28 children were involved in crafts, singing, dancing and playing games.
The team completed laying the cinder blocks for the basement floor, and constructed over 20 steel rebar "towers" that are used in the structure for earthquake protection of the walls and floor.
If you have any questions about the project, feel free to contact John Sobecki.

Mission Team Member Report
I was privileged to join 11 others on the mission trip to Costa Rica this May. Our team became one in purpose. We worked hard on the foundation of the parsonage, led a Vacation Bible School (VBS) in Spanish, worshipped in a new culture and language, and studied the book of Ephesians. We were blessed far more than what we had to offer our beautiful new friends from la Iglesia Metodista Faro de Este (The Methodist Church of the East).
God showed up in wonderful and unexpected ways. There are many stories to share, but I will just choose one. We had not thought of a creative way to greet the kids and moms, but God provided that for us. We had decorated the room with balloons and streamers. Day one a boy named Gabriel and his mom Yali came 30 minutes early. Gabriel took a balloon off of a chair and began playing ‘keep it up.’ He and I then transitioned into a game of soccer with this balloon, using chairs as goals. (So fun!!) Balloons became a wonderful daily icebreaker, and got us past the language barrier to simply play and laugh! God was present throughout the entire trip, and he provided in this specific way through the creativity of a child.
If you feel the Spirit nudging you to sign up for the next trip, or to help provide resources for this project, please do! There is a lot more work to be done, and wonderful people to meet. The details and projects of the trip are still being worked out, but I can guarantee there will be work to be done on the parsonage, as that is the main project. There may be barriers that could keep you from going - in fact there probably will be. However, if God is calling you, then please listen! He will help you over, around, or through whatever barrier could get in the way. He did for me.
May you be blessed today,
- Joy
